The West Coast Council in Tasmania commissioned Batchelor Construction Group to build a new landfill cell, wetlands, and related infrastructure near Zeehan. The work scope encompassed a three-layer landfill liner system consisting of GCL, HDPE, and Geofabric, along with a new leachate pond, wetland system, and a surface water management system featuring a sediment pond and site access roads.
Rigorous CQA by IPD Consulting, coupled with independent testing of materials, was mandated to meet EPA regulations and project specifications.
The project incorporated several innovative approaches. Challenges faced included the West Coast’s persistent wet weather, with over 3.5 meters of rainfall during the project, and the handling of 50,000m3 of acid sulphate soils and rock.
Despite these obstacles, the project was completed within budget and to a high standard of quality.
